Rooted in History
Mike Trowbridge Jr. opened Odd Fellows Barber Co. in 2021 in his hometown of Mansfield. The barbershop is located in a distinctive space that was one of the Odd Fellows fraternal society's old meeting lodges. Mike embraced this history, crafting a unique "upstairs barbershop, kind of speakeasy vibe" and a brand that is inclusive. He aims for a space where everyone feels welcome, describing it as "for the odd ones out. For the ones who bet the odds". The environment is designed to feel welcoming, as if customers are "coming into our living room and we're... hanging out". The brand ties in elements of the Odd Fellows insignia, including the scissor and razors, the all-seeing eye, and chains.
The Mobile Airstream
Mike's entrepreneurial journey, combined with his experience cutting hair backstage, led him to develop the idea of a mobile barber setup. This vision materialized when Mike found an Airstream trailer, recognizing it as a "diamond in the rough" and a "hidden gem".
To secure this crucial piece of equipment, Mike turned to North Easton Savings Bank. NESB provided a small equipment loan, allowing him to launch the mobile operation. Mike credits the existing relationship established when he first opened his business account with the Bank for facilitating the funding.
What I thought was gonna be the biggest hurdle ended up being one of the easiest things, you know, just securing the, securing the funding to, to make it happen.
The mobile operation proved immensely successful, completing about 500 haircuts in one summer alone.
Mike notes that the Bank has been "with us through each phase as the shop has grown, as I've grown as a professional" and that the Bank's support helped people see the mobile operation as "not just, you know, haircuts, something a little bit more."
The Natural Progression to a New Home
The success of the shop and the mobile operation led to the business outgrowing its original space. Odd Fellows has now moved to a new, larger location—a 2,000-square-foot historic building in Mansfield. This move represents the "physical manifestation" of the brand's growth and is the "next natural progression" for Odd Fellows Barber Co.
